Erhürman: Christodoulides’ Call for a Solution Rings Hollow While Ignoring Turkish Cypriots

In a written statement, Erhürman underlined that no decisions could be made regarding energy or maritime jurisdiction without the participation and consent of Turkish Cypriots, one of the island’s two co-founding communities.

“From long before the election period, we have voiced our objections to this project,” he said. “Turkish Cypriots are one of the two equal founding partners of this island, and decisions cannot be taken on matters such as energy and maritime zones by ignoring our sovereign rights and without our approval.”

Erhürman recalled his previous remarks following the election, noting that he had refused to engage in a “blame game” before talks resume and that his position remains unchanged.

Commenting on Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides’ recent statements, Erhürman said it was not sincere for him to call for a comprehensive settlement while simultaneously pursuing energy initiatives that exclude Turkish Cypriots.

“For a solution in Cyprus, we first need a solution atmosphere,” he said. “It is clear that such an atmosphere cannot be achieved through initiatives that ignore the Turkish Cypriot people, especially those that risk undermining regional stability and lasting peace efforts.”

Erhürman concluded by reaffirming his commitment to fostering conditions for a settlement, while warning that actions damaging this atmosphere would not go unnoticed.
