Kunzel’s Hearing Postponed as Uncertainty Persists Over Extradition of Iranian Suspect Caferi
The extradition of Iranian national Behad Caferi — arrested in France on allegations of exploiting Greek Cypriot properties in Northern Cyprus — remains unresolved, while the trial of German real estate agent Ewa Isabella Kunzel has been postponed to allow preparation of final submissions.
French authorities detained Caferi on 14 October in Nice under a European arrest warrant issued by the Greek Cypriot side in connection with a new case involving the alleged misuse of Greek Cypriot properties in the TRNC. According to a report in Politis, Caferi is currently being held in a Nice prison, and there have been no new developments regarding his transfer to the south.
The newspaper noted that, given that nearly two months have passed since his arrest, Caferi may be refusing extradition — a stance that would require a French court to rule on the matter. Should a court approve the extradition, Greek Cypriot police officers would have ten days to travel to France and escort him to the south.
German Realtor’s Case Delayed
Meanwhile, the heavy-penal court hearing for German realtor Ewa Isabella Kunzel — who is on trial in the south in connection with alleged offences involving Greek Cypriot properties in the TRNC — was adjourned yesterday.
The second “trial within a trial” phase has concluded, leaving only the final submissions from both sides before the court issues its decision.
Kunzel’s lawyer requested the postponement to better prepare the defence’s final arguments, a request to which the prosecution did not object. Final submissions are scheduled for next Monday.
