Police Warn of Zero Tolerance for Gun Use During New Year Celebrations

In a written statement issued by the PGM Press Office, police underlined that firing weapons for celebratory or other purposes reflects “an outdated mentality and backwardness.”

The statement noted that violent behaviour is becoming increasingly widespread, with the use of firearms in violent incidents rising steadily, and highlighted that hundreds of people around the world are injured or killed each year as a result of gun violence.

Police stressed that firing shots into the air, regardless of the reason, poses a serious risk to life, particularly in residential areas with multi-storey buildings. The statement also pointed out that alcohol consumption dulls perception and that the use of firearms while in an impaired mental state plays a significant role in causing unintended and dangerous incidents.

The PGM further said that using firearms during New Year celebrations or for any other reason aligns with what is commonly described as “hooliganism,” a behaviour regarded today as socially unacceptable.

According to existing legislation, the illegal importation, possession, carrying or use of firearms constitutes a criminal offence. The statement reminded the public that such crimes carry prison sentences ranging from seven to 10 years, depending on the circumstances.

Police reiterated that they will enforce a zero-tolerance policy against firearm use under any circumstances, including during New Year celebrations, and said that offenders will be identified and legal proceedings initiated against them.
