E.K. (37), who was brought before the Famagusta District Court, was ordered to remain in detention for three days following a court ruling.

The suspect had been arrested earlier after it was determined that he was linked to an incident in which a person, introducing himself via WhatsApp as “Azat” and claiming to be the leader of a Turkey-based criminal organisation, demanded 150,000 US dollars as “protection money.”

According to the Police General Directorate’s Special Investigation Unit, E.K. was detained after it was established that he had sent information about the business owners, along with the location of their workplace, to the individual making the threats.

Police Sergeant Mustafa İnce, who presented the findings to the court, said that on 18 December a person identifying himself as Azat contacted a business owner and his son in Famagusta via WhatsApp, claimed to be the leader of the “Casperler Gang,” demanded 150,000 dollars and threatened to kill them.

İnce told the court that the investigation revealed the suspect E.K. had provided the businessman’s details to Azat, leading to his arrest.

Stating that the investigation is still at an early stage, İnce added that the gang in question had also threatened several other businesses in the country, and requested that the suspect remain in custody.
