Five Public Sector Unions Light Fire Outside Prime Ministry: Protests To Escalate Step By Step
Five public sector unions marched from the Gonyeli roundabout to the Prime Ministry under the banner “No to Corruption, Poverty and Destruction,” vowing that the protest marked only the beginning of a broader campaign that would intensify in the coming days.
The demonstration was organised by the Cyprus Turkish Public Servants’ Trade Union (KTAMS), the Cyprus Turkish Public Employees’ Trade Union (KAMUSEN), the Public Workers’ Union (KAMU-İŞ), the Cyprus Turkish Teachers’ Trade Union (KTÖS) and the Cyprus Turkish Secondary Education Teachers’ Union (KTOEÖS), with participation at executive board level.
Chanting slogans such as “Government Resign” and “End Corruption,” protesters reached the Prime Ministry amid applause. Following a press statement, demonstrators lit a fire outside the building as a symbolic act of protest.
Union representatives stressed that the march was a first step and warned that actions would continue to grow in scale. They announced that another protest would be held on Wednesday, 14 January, with a march from the Hamitkoy roundabout to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment, which is under the Prime Ministry.
