Greek Cypriot Press: Holguin To Visit The Island In Late January
Greek Cypriot daily Fileleftheros has reported that the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín, is expected to visit the island in late January and hold meetings with the two leaders.
According to the report, Holguín is expected to meet separately with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, while a joint meeting has not been ruled out. The Greek Cypriot government is said to be expecting Holguín to brief it on her recent contacts in Ankara.
The newspaper noted that Holguín’s visit is expected to coincide with the period during which the UN Secretary-General’s report on UNFICYP will be discussed at the UN Security Council.
It was also reported that the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus, Khassim Diagne, yesterday briefed countries contributing troops to UNFICYP during a closed-door meeting in New York. Diagne is expected to brief the UN Security Council today on the Secretary-General’s Good Offices Mission.
According to Fileleftheros, the Security Council is also expected to consider a decision calling on both sides to build confidence and refrain from actions that could undermine the political climate, as well as a request for Holguín to brief Council members.
The newspaper added that the impact of new financial arrangements on UNFICYP’s operations is also expected to be discussed.
