KTSO Calls For Tighter Controls On Imported Products
The Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry (KTSO) has called for stricter and more systematic inspections of imported products, warning that recent allegations highlight serious weaknesses in current control mechanisms.
In a written statement, KTSO referred to reports concerning substandard construction materials that disintegrate when exposed to rain, expired food products, and cosmetic and cleaning items that fail to meet required standards, as well as irregularities in invoicing and documentation procedures.
The Chamber said these claims demonstrate the urgent need for stronger and more coordinated oversight in import inspections, customs practices and product safety controls.
KTSO stressed that the issue must be treated with the utmost seriousness due to its direct implications for public health, human safety and the public interest. It noted that construction materials in particular are used in housing, schools and workplaces, making the matter one of broad social concern that requires comprehensive evaluation.
The statement said the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry considers it essential to strengthen inspection mechanisms in import processes and to make product compliance and control procedures more transparent, traceable and effective.
