Harmancı Rules Out TDP Leadership Bid, Signals Re-election Run
Nicosia Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı has announced that he will not seek the chairmanship of the Communal Democracy Party (TDP), instead indicating that he plans to run for another term as mayor.
Speaking on Kanal T’s programme, Harmancı evaluated the possibility of early elections and internal party processes, saying that under current conditions it would be unfair both to himself and to the incumbent party leader to enter the race for party leadership.
“I believe it would be more beneficial to stand again for the mayoralty for one more term,” Harmancı said.
Referring to the possibility that early elections could be held in May, June or December, Harmancı noted that challenging a party leader who has been in office for two years without adequate preparation would not be appropriate. He stressed that there is an ongoing political process that should be allowed to continue in the most constructive way.
Harmancı added that, at this stage, seeking another term as Mayor of Nicosia Turkish Municipality would be a more correct choice in terms of public benefit.
