Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides met in the UN buffer zone in Nicosia at the invitation of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, where preconditions for the resumption of negotiations and confidence-building measures were discussed.
The meeting, hosted by Holguin, took place at the residence of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Khassim Diagne. It began at around 11.00 and concluded at approximately 13.00.
During the meeting, the preconditions for restarting the Cyprus negotiations and the possible roadmap to be followed were addressed. The two sides exchanged views and proposals regarding the launch of substantive negotiations.
In her assessment following the meeting, Holguin underlined that such direct dialogue is vital for the clear expression of views, concerns and expectations. She noted that the process remains at the pre-negotiation stage and stressed that continuous and direct dialogue is indispensable at this phase.
The list of confidence-building measures previously placed on the table was also discussed. The parties reviewed the work carried out under these headings and noted that some progress had been achieved between the two sides.
The leaders stated that efforts would continue to reach agreement on various confidence-building measures and to move towards the start of substantive negotiations.
