Ünal Üstel: Referendum On Judicial Reform To Be Held In May
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced that a referendum on judicial reform will be held in the first week of May as part of efforts to update laws dating back to 1925–1926.
Speaking from the parliamentary rostrum, Üstel said construction of the Supreme Court building is nearing completion, which will help ease physical overcrowding in the courts. He noted that many laws in the judicial system still date back to 1925–1926 and stressed that a comprehensive reform process is being carried out in cooperation with the Supreme Court and the Bar Association.
Üstel stated that the necessary legislative amendments within the scope of the reform will be passed by parliament and then submitted to a referendum in the first week of May.
He underlined that they oppose bringing early elections onto the agenda before this process is completed, emphasizing that the priority is the implementation of judicial reform.
Noting that discussions on early elections have come to an end, Üstel said the process will take shape in line with the parliamentary majority.
