Dispute Erupts In South Cyprus Over Representation At Gaza Peace Council
Sharp divisions have emerged in South Cyprus over who should represent the Greek Cypriot side at the Gaza Peace Council meeting to be held in Washington, with political parties split over the government’s decision to take part in the initiative convened by US President Donald Trump.
According to Fileleftheros, contacts and consultations continued throughout the day as authorities sought to reach a final decision on representation. The newspaper reported that no official announcement had been made by Tuesday, though sources familiar with behind-the-scenes discussions did not rule out a decision being announced on Wednesday.
In a report titled “Fierce Internal Debate Over the Peace Council,” Fileleftheros said uncertainty remained over who would represent South Cyprus at the Gaza Peace Council meeting in Washington. Political parties have issued contrasting statements, highlighting deep disagreements within the domestic political front.
AKEL
AKEL criticised the decision of the government of Nikos Christodoulides to attend what it described as President Trump’s “Peace Council” meeting, calling it a characteristic example of ideological insistence.
The party warned that participation could pose risks to Cyprus’ cause, which it said is based on international law and UN resolutions, stressing that the government should not ignore these dangers.
DISY
DISY leader Annita Demetriou said South Cyprus’ participation in international initiatives should not be rejected in advance or assessed through what she described as an ideological filter, as AKEL had done.
She also criticised the government for failing to inform political parties and the public in a timely manner about its objectives and positions regarding the meeting.
ELAM
ELAM said accepting the invitation to attend the meeting, even with observer status, constituted a substantive and responsible choice for South Cyprus.
DIPA and Volt
DIPA expressed a positive stance toward participation in the meeting, while Volt opposed the decision to attend.
Meanwhile, Politis covered the issue under the headline “The Dangers of Bowing to Trump’s Personal Agendas… A President Playing With Fire and Personal Delusions,” reporting that Christodoulides’ decision to take part in the Gaza Peace Council as an observer had triggered strong reactions on the domestic political front.
Politis also published statements from political parties, underscoring the widening debate over whether South Cyprus should be represented at the Washington meeting.
