Fileleftheros: Factor Affecting Talks Is Holguin’s Role in Partner’s Election Campaign

The newspaper noted that Holguin recently published an opinion article in which she referred to the impact of the upcoming parliamentary elections in South Cyprus in May on the negotiation process. However, it found it noteworthy that she made no reference to her participation in the campaign team of her partner, Sergio Fajardo, who is running in Colombia’s presidential election scheduled for May 31.

Under the headline “She Is Taking Part in the Colombian Elections – Colombia Has Presidential Elections,” Fileleftheros recalled that Holguin had identified three factors negatively affecting efforts on the Cyprus problem, including the parliamentary elections set for May 24 and South Cyprus’ forthcoming EU Council presidency. She was quoted as saying that time should be given to President Tufan Erhürman in view of these developments.

The newspaper reported, however, that Holguin did not mention in her article the approaching Colombian presidential election or the fact that her involvement in the campaign would occupy her until the end of May.

According to Fileleftheros, shortly before Holguin arrived in Cyprus in early January, Fajardo announced that she would formally join his campaign team, assuming an advisory role on diplomacy and international relations. Fajardo reportedly said Holguin would lead visits across different parts of the country and contribute to the preparation of political proposals for the government programme.

Holguin was also quoted as saying that her decision to participate in the campaign stemmed from serious concerns over political polarisation in Colombia.

The newspaper added that Colombian television channel Noticias Caracol broadcast a video of Fajardo together with Holguin, describing her as his life partner.
