Speaking from the parliamentary rostrum, Üstel replied to remarks made by CTP leader Sıla Usar İncirli, outlining the details of the agreement. He recalled that the protocol also involves Türk Telekom, whose largest shareholder is the Turkish Wealth Fund, and therefore represents a cooperative initiative with Turkey.

Üstel said the protocol had been prepared in consultation with legal experts and noted that it would enter into force with the signature of Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz.

“No one should worry, regulations will be made through additional protocols”

Drawing attention to international developments and regional risks, Üstel said the opposition had objected to many previous joint projects as well. He underlined that supplementary protocols were possible and that, as in past cases, new arrangements could be introduced to resolve concerns.

“There is no reason for anxiety. Necessary corrections can and will be made through additional protocols,” he said.

“Exemptions reflect the strategic and vital nature of the project”

Üstel stated that Turkey has never turned down the needs of the Turkish Cypriot people and argued that the exemptions included in the protocol stem from the project’s vital and strategic importance. He added that the initiative also relates directly to public security and that any problematic aspects could be revised through supplementary agreements.

“We will support every step proposed within Turkey’s strategic policies”

Addressing internet service providers and industrial stakeholders, Üstel said no one would be disadvantaged by the project. He maintained that the new infrastructure would deliver faster and more affordable internet services and that no institution or organisation would be excluded.

Describing the project as a major strategic investment for the country, Üstel concluded by saying that the government would support every step proposed within the framework of Turkey’s strategic policies.
