Nicosia Mayor Supports New Crossing Point in Ayios Hilarionos
Haralambos Prountzos, Mayor of Greek Nicosia, announced support for opening a new crossing point in the Ayios Hilarionos area of the Kaymaklı suburb in northeast Nicosia.
Prountzos said that following a year of discussions with Mehmet Harmancı and Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou, a draft proposal has been prepared to allow vehicle crossings at the new point.
Acknowledging “obstacles and difficulties,” he noted that while a crossing in the Mia Milia (Haspolat) area of northeast Nicosia might be technically easier, under current conditions the Kaymaklı option is considered the most feasible.
Prountzos stressed that a potential Kaymaklı crossing would not prevent the municipality’s long-term plans to establish additional points along the Haspolat, Athienou–Pyroi–Eylence route. Alternative crossings remain under consideration.
He highlighted traffic congestion at Ay Demet, the city’s only central vehicle crossing, noting that only three of its seven checkpoints are currently operational.
Prountzos also warned that potential inclusion of South Cyprus in the Schengen Area would require stricter vehicle controls, likely exacerbating existing traffic issues. He emphasized that the current situation places considerable pressure on local residents, and that opening a Kaymaklı crossing could help alleviate this burden.
