Protesters Throw Stones, Chant “Resign” at Parliament

During a protest against the cost-of-living bill at the parliament, demonstrators threw stones at police, prompting authorities to use tear gas to restore order.

Protesters continued chanting “Government resign” to express their opposition. One police officer was reportedly injured, and the thrown stones also broke windows at the parliament building and a fire truck.

After a brief confrontation with police in front of the parliament, unions that had called a general strike over the cost-of-living bill breached barricades and entered the building. Police responded with water cannons and tear gas.

Meanwhile, as the UBP parliamentary group meeting continued, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel’s final position on the bill and whether he will meet with the unions is expected to be clarified after the session.

Numerous People and Union Leaders Detained During Police Intervention at Protest

According to information obtained by Kıbrıs Postası, a large number of individuals and union leaders were taken into custody by police during the intervention at the protest site.

Journalists were seriously injured during the operation.

Meanwhile, CTP MP Devrim Barçın was subjected to heavy water cannon fire and police action.

At the protest site, riot police used shields, batons, and tear gas to control demonstrators.

Demonstrators threw stones at a fire truck, breaking its windows. Police used tear gas against the protesters, followed by intervention with water cannons.

Meanwhile, CTP MP Ongun Talat was also affected by the tear gas.
