Parliament Will Not Convene This Week, New Roadmap Expected Next Week
The General Assembly of the Cumhuriyet Meclisi will not convene this week, with a new roadmap on the cost-of-living process expected to become clear next week, officials said following a meeting of the Advisory Council.
The council met under the chairmanship of Speaker Ziya Öztürkler, with the meeting starting at 10:45 a.m. and concluding shortly afterwards.
Attendees included Sunat Atun and Ahmet Savaşan from the National Unity Party (UBP), as well as Sıla Usar İncirli, Asım Akansoy and Erkut Şahali from the Republican Turkish Party (CTP).
The General Assembly had adjourned at around 4:00 a.m. on Thursday during discussions on the cost-of-living bill. Öztürkler said the break was taken to prevent possible clashes between MPs, police and citizens.
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel had earlier announced that the bill would be removed from this week’s agenda and postponed to the next sitting.
Following this development, trade unions suspended their planned general strike, stating that action would remain on hold until the parliament reconvenes with the cost-of-living issue back on its agenda, while warning that strikes could resume if the process continues from where it left off.
