Tensions Rise in Pyla Buffer Zone

Tensions are rising in the buffer zone around Pyla, according to information obtained by Kıbrıs Postası. A dispute that began earlier this week between the two sides and the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus over the Çayhan Plain escalated this morning, with military elements belonging to the Turkish army reportedly moving into a state of readiness.

The situation in the area is described as highly tense.

UN Calls for Restraint

UN officials stated that the situation on the ground remained calm as of the morning, noting that patrols have been increased and the presence of peacekeeping forces reinforced.

Khassim Diagne, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus and head of UNFICYP, has called on all sides to exercise restraint and stressed the importance of respecting the mission’s authority.

Reports Also Reflected in Greek Cypriot Media

According to Greek Cypriot media, international agencies, and field reports, tensions continue to rise between UN peacekeepers and Turkish-side elements in the buffer zone near Pyla, particularly in the Çayhan area.

The dispute is said to center on access to and control of six livestock units operated by Turkish Cypriots in the area.

Reports from Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation and Sigma TV claim that police units from the north have recently increased patrols in the area to as many as 10 times per day, with additional personnel deployed. These developments are being interpreted as an attempt to alter the status quo in the buffer zone.

Claims of Military Build-Up

Greek Cypriot media further alleged that approximately 15 tanks have been deployed to the المنطقة, Turkish flags raised at certain points, and a significant number of personnel in civilian clothing sent to the area. At the same time, elements linked to British bases were also reportedly mobilized, increasing activity on the ground.

Veterinary Access and Animal Health Concerns

Concerns over foot-and-mouth disease have emerged as a key dimension of the crisis. Veterinary teams are reportedly unable to access the area, with authorities denying entry.

Turkish Cypriot livestock owners have been requesting veterinary assistance for days, but access has not been granted. It is reported that the UN has attempted to escort veterinarians into the area, though these efforts were also blocked.

There are also warnings that vaccination schedules for animals are at risk. While the first dose was administered around five weeks ago, time is running out for the second dose. Without timely access, animals may no longer be considered vaccinated, raising serious health concerns.
