Baykallı: New Crossing Points Are Now A Necessity
TDP Central Executive Committee member Kemal Baykallı has said that new crossing points in Cyprus have become a necessity, noting that existing checkpoints are insufficient.
The Communal Democracy Party (TDP) continues its contacts with international media organisations visiting the island within the scope of the European Union summit, highlighting the determination of Turkish Cypriots for a solution and the risks created by the current status quo.
Baykallı, in interviews with Germany’s ZDF television and Spain’s national radio, said that a solution to the Cyprus issue is necessary not only for the people of the island but also for regional security and cooperation.
“The status quo generates risks”
Baykallı warned that delaying a solution could increase tensions in the region, stating:
“Turkish Cypriots are determined for a solution. In a region where seemingly frozen conflicts are turning into active crises one by one, the current situation in Cyprus carries serious risks for Cypriots, the European Union, and regional countries. The international community must provide stronger support for solution efforts.”
“Approaches outside federal solution weaken the process”
Baykallı stressed that approaches outside a federal solution based on the political equality of the two communities weaken the process.
“Schengen process may create new risks”
Referring to South Cyprus’ efforts to join the Schengen area, Baykallı said this could create new political consequences.
He stated:
“The problems created by Cyprus joining the European Union as a divided island without a solution are evident. South Cyprus’ efforts to join Schengen risk turning the Green Line into the EU’s external border. We are clearly explaining this to our interlocutors.”
“New crossing points are now a necessity”
Commenting on crossing points, Baykallı said the current situation is unsustainable.
“On the 23rd anniversary of the opening of the first crossing point, new crossings are not a choice but a necessity. Making people wait for hours and making daily life harder is unacceptable. Leaderships that fail to act on this also create distrust within their own communities,” he said.
TDP said it will continue its international contacts and keep voicing the Turkish Cypriot community’s will for a solution on every platform.
