Üstel to Christodoulides: “Abandon Dangerous Steps Over French Troops, You Will Be the Loser”
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has reacted to Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides’ statement regarding the possible deployment of French troops to Southern Cyprus, warning that such moves threaten the island’s peace and stability.
In a written statement, Üstel said Christodoulides’ remarks following his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron were “highly dangerous, provocative and unacceptable.”
“President Christodoulides’ statement that French troops will be deployed to Southern Cyprus is an extremely dangerous, provocative and unacceptable step,” Üstel said.
He argued that while the Greek Cypriot leader speaks of a new negotiation process on the one hand, he simultaneously ignores the Turkish Cypriot people, adding that this contradiction reveals his “true intentions.”
Üstel stressed that no military presence or deployment on the island could take place without the consent of the Turkish Cypriot people, adding that any such move without approval would be “null and void under international law.”
He also criticised French President Emmanuel Macron, describing his remarks as “arrogant” and accusing France of having a colonial mindset, claiming that its approach would ultimately lead to disappointment for the Greek Cypriot side.
Üstel said France, as an EU member, and its policies reflect what he described as the bloc’s “double standards,” arguing that no EU member can take decisions that ignore the sovereign rights and security of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
Reiterating that the Turkish Cypriot people continue to operate their own state institutions based on peace, security and justice, Üstel said they would remain within the framework of international law.
He called on Macron and the EU to abandon what he described as a colonial approach to the Cyprus issue and adopt a fair stance.
Warning Christodoulides directly, Üstel said: “You are turning Southern Cyprus into a base for foreign troops and an area of influence for external powers. These policies will bring no benefit either to you or to the Greek Cypriot people.”
“My advice is to abandon these dangerous steps that will darken your future. Otherwise, the loser will once again be you,” he added.
