Military Activity Around Cyprus Expected To Decline
Greek Cypriot media has claimed that the military build-up around Cyprus following the outbreak of war between the United States and Iran, as well as the drone attack on the British bases, is beginning to decrease.
According to Politis newspaper, under the headline “Naval Forces Around Cyprus Are Decreasing – Their Gradual Withdrawal From the Region Is Expected,” the intensified naval activity around the island caused by the US-Iran war and the drone strike on the British bases in Southern Cyprus has entered a phase of gradual reduction.
The newspaper wrote that with the completion of last week’s informal EU leaders’ summit, the number of military assets in the surrounding waters is expected to decline further.
It reported that the Greek frigates Kimon and Psara have been replaced by the frigate Elli, which is equipped with an anti-drone system.
The paper also noted that two F-16 fighter jets continue to be stationed at the base in Paphos.
According to the report, the British warship HMS Dragon, which had been deployed to the region, left the area in early April due to a technical malfunction, while France’s aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is reportedly waiting for new orders off the coast of Cyprus.
The newspaper also claimed that, according to information provided by an authorised source, anti-drone systems were installed following the drone attack on the British bases, and that some of the anti-aircraft systems of the Greek Cypriot National Guard had been adapted to function against drones as well.
