Erhürman: All Views To Be Considered On Controversial Law
President Tufan Erhürman has said that all stakeholders will be consulted regarding the legislation passed by Parliament banning the use of names and photographs in reporting on judicial proceedings, adding that all views will be taken into consideration and that constitutional powers may be exercised if deemed necessary.
Erhürman stated that he has been closely following the discussions surrounding the amendment to the Criminal Procedure Law, which has sparked debate over press freedom and the presumption of innocence.
The President’s full statement is as follows:
“I am closely following the discussions within the framework of ‘press freedom’ and ‘presumption of innocence’ regarding a law passed by Parliament.
The Presidency will consult all relevant parties and evaluate all opinions.
The Presidency naturally already has a view on the matter as of today; however, not considering this view superior to others and allowing all relevant parties the opportunity to express their opinions, and evaluating these views, is a requirement of democracy.
In light of the assessments to be made, it is well known to the public that, if deemed necessary, the Presidency will not refrain from exercising any of its constitutional powers, as in previous cases.”
