The embryos were reportedly found during a routine police check at the airport’s Gate 8 control point on 19 May 2026, inside a container labeled “Life Parcel” and a referenced storage tank. Authorities stated that the individual was attempting to take the embryos out of the TRNC without official permission.

Police said the suspect, identified as Y.G., was detained for “violating the Law on Human Cells, Tissues and Organ Transplantation.”

According to testimony presented in court by police officer Afet Olgan, the embryos were discovered in four separate vials inside a storage tank containing a total of four embryos.

Investigations indicated that the embryos had been obtained from a private in vitro fertilization (IVF) center operating in Nicosia.

Authorities further stated that while there had been an application to export the embryos abroad, no official approval had been granted by the competent authorities at the time of the incident.

The embryos were seized as evidence, and the suspect provided a voluntary statement during questioning.

Police requested a two-day detention period, citing the need to continue the investigation, obtain necessary permissions and statements, and review CCTV footage.

The court accepted the request and ordered that the suspect remain in custody for two days pending further investigation.
