Cafer Gürcafer: “We Are Reaping What We Sowed"

Gürcafer said that while international geopolitical and interest-based dynamics have an impact, the failure of the northern side to take necessary steps in time has also played a significant role in the current outcome.

“There is a saying: ‘Everyone reaps what they sow.’ Today, we are reaping what we sowed,” he said.

He stressed that the situation should not be approached with alarmist rhetoric, but that it is essential to draw lessons from recent developments.

Gürcafer underlined that the coming years are critically important and must be managed with maximum efficiency and without mistakes, warning that even if the first stage does not produce decisive results, “what may come after the second stage could be a disaster in itself.”

He said: “There is a saying, ‘Everyone reaps what they sow.’ We are reaping what we sowed. The Greek Cypriot side reaching 25 votes in the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers is undoubtedly also influenced by international interest balances. However, we cannot ignore the extent to which this is also the result of what we should have done but did not do, which helped create the current conditions. Of course, alarmist rhetoric will not take us anywhere, but it is vital that we draw lessons and spend the next few years without mistakes and with maximum efficiency. Even if the first stage does not produce a result, what may come after the second stage could be disaster itself. Therefore, we must understand that we no longer have the luxury of ignoring reality or saying ‘we have the motherland behind us, nothing will happen to us.’ The necessary steps are clear. All that is needed is will and determination.”
