Speaking on the “Kıbrıs’ta Sabah” programme on KIBRIS TV, hosted by Eda Alisinanoğlu, Arıklı shared key insights into transportation infrastructure in Northern Cyprus.
Accreditation and DHMİ Oversight
Arıklı stated that once technical shortcomings at Ercan Airport are addressed, an audit will be carried out by a UK-based accreditation firm. He explained that if Ercan is brought under the control of Turkey’s General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ), the airport could be reclassified similarly to Antalya-B or Çukurova-B, allowing for international flights under the status of domestic routes from Turkey.
“Ticket Prices Could Drop”
Noting that a similar model has been successfully implemented at Georgia’s Batumi Airport under Turkish management, Arıklı suggested the same approach could work in the TRNC. “If the lower and upper fare limits applied to domestic flights in Turkey are enforced here as well, ticket prices could be kept between 2,000 and 5,000 TL. This system would boost tourism and foster urban development,” he said.
Protocol to Be Signed After Eid al-Adha
Arıklı announced that the protocol required to enable international operations at Ercan Airport is expected to be signed after the Eid al-Adha holiday. He said all relevant parties would convene to finalise the process, after which the international accreditation firm would be invited for inspection. The minister added that the aim is to complete this process within a few months.
