EU Cyprus Envoy Johannes Hahn Visits Island for First Time
European Commission Special Envoy for Cyprus Johannes Hahn has arrived on the island for his first visit since his appointment in May, aiming to meet with both sides and listen to their perspectives on the ongoing Cyprus issue.
According to Fileleftheros, Hahn was scheduled to meet with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides this morning. Citing sources from the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), the report noted that following his meeting with Christodoulides, Hahn would engage in a series of contacts to “listen to his counterparts.”
During his visit, Hahn has already met with Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelau, UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus Colin Stewart, and ambassadors of EU member states.
Alithia also reported that, according to Commission sources, the primary aim of Hahn’s visit is to listen to all relevant stakeholders in order to effectively carry out his mandate. He is also expected to hold meetings with representatives of the Turkish Cypriot community.
