Following the significant increase in the price of water imported from Turkey, municipalities across the country have raised the rates they charge residents. The updated tariffs were implemented swiftly, adding further pressure on households dealing with economic hardship. Many, especially those on fixed incomes, say the sharp increase in the cost of a basic necessity like water will make daily life even more difficult.

Price Paid by Municipalities Nearly Doubled

According to a new regulation published in the Official Gazette on 11 June 2025, the sale price of drinking water sent from Turkey to the TRNC rose from 9.80 TL to 18.28 TL per cubic meter. The regulation came into force on 15 June, marking an 86% increase in the wholesale price of water supplied to municipalities.

Municipalities Pass the Burden to the Public

In response, municipal councils adjusted their local water tariffs. For example, the Çatalköy–Esentepe Municipality raised its lowest water rate from 28 TL to 37 TL per ton, reflecting a 9 TL increase. Similar hikes are believed to have been enacted by other municipalities as well.
