Hasipoğlu Accuses Greek Cypriot Side of Blocking Progress on Cyprus Talks

Speaking via phone on Kıbrıs Postası TV, Hasipoğlu said the Greek Cypriot leadership is more interested in preserving the status quo than making progress. Commenting on the informal expanded 5+1 meeting hosted by the UN in New York, he stressed the importance of dialogue and noted that four out of six agreed confidence-building measures had seen progress.

He acknowledged advancements in areas such as climate change and civil society engagement but said that despite progress on technical issues concerning energy projects and new crossings, consensus had not been reached. Hasipoğlu added that President Ersin Tatar had shown a constructive attitude and a significant step forward had been taken, but the Greek Cypriot side continued to avoid cooperation.

Describing the Greek Cypriot stance as a deliberate effort to stall the process and maintain the status quo, Hasipoğlu warned that the issue of new crossings could lead to a crisis. He criticized what he described as an insincere and unyielding approach regarding buffer zone transit points, saying it undermines trust and blocks meaningful cooperation.

Despite the Turkish Cypriot side’s constructive proposals, Hasipoğlu said the Greek Cypriots once again failed the test of sincerity.
