Ataoğlu: Technological Monitoring Begins to Combat Noise Pollution

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu has announced the launch of a continuous environmental noise monitoring initiative, marking a significant step in addressing noise pollution across the country.

“With an investment of approximately €300,000 funded by the European Union, we have established an environmental noise monitoring system. This enables us to begin real-time, 24/7 monitoring and enforcement,” he said.
Ataoğlu explained that the system will systematically monitor noise pollution in high-traffic and entertainment-heavy areas, particularly those with numerous music venues. “The data collected from the installed monitoring devices will be instantly transmitted to the central system of the Environmental Protection Department. This will not only help identify problems but also allow for faster response and intervention when necessary,” he added.
Devices Installed at 11 Locations
As part of the project, a total of 11 monitoring devices have been installed: three in Famagusta, one in İskele Long Beach, three in Nicosia, three in Kyrenia, and one in Lapta. Ataoğlu emphasized that the move is a key step toward improving urban quality of life.
He also announced that strategic noise maps will be developed for certain areas with technical support from European Union experts. “We are planning not only for today but for the future,” Ataoğlu said. “The expert support in this area will continue in the coming years. Our goal is to protect both public health and the quality of the environment.”
“Noise pollution is not just a nuisance—it is also a public health issue,” he concluded, underlining the government's determination to continue implementing environmental monitoring projects and to harness technology for the benefit of the environment.
