Greek Cypriot Press: Objections Delay Aykut Trial

Politis newspaper reported that repeated objections by AFIK Group CEO Simon Mistriel Aykut are slowing down proceedings in a case concerning Greek Cypriot-owned property in the TRNC. Aykut has been held in custody in the south since last year in connection with the case.

Under the headline “Objections Delay Trial,” the paper said successive procedural motions filed by Aykut have delayed the process. The trial, being heard in the criminal court, is still at the stage where the prosecution’s first witnesses are testifying, with their number expected to exceed 100.

The 75-year-old defendant is reportedly using every legal avenue available under the “Republic of Cyprus” laws to seek release. According to the report, compared with similar cases ongoing at the Nicosia Criminal Court, the Aykut case is the largest and most serious in scope.

The key difference, the paper noted, is that Aykut is accused of building tourist complexes for sale on land that belonged to Greek Cypriots before 1974, while defendants in other cases are estate agents advertising property sales in the TRNC.

Politis claimed that the delays in the trial are largely due to the successive objections and motions filed by Aykut and his lawyers. Facing 242 charges, Aykut’s health issues have also taken up significant court time. The trial is scheduled to resume in September.
