Journalists’ Union Launches Anti-Disinformation Campaign Ahead of Elections

The Turkish Cypriot Journalists’ Union (KTGB) has launched a social media campaign under the hashtag #Question (#sorgula) to warn citizens against manipulation and ensure access to accurate information during election periods. The campaign emphasizes vigilance against divisive language, fear-based messaging, fake comments, and unverified polls.

KTGB explained that the initiative aims to combat the growing problem of disinformation and misinformation in the digital age, particularly during elections, through public service announcements and visuals shared on social media. The campaign highlights potential manipulations voters may encounter.
The campaign’s key messages include:
-
Divisive language: Be cautious of rhetoric that divides society or targets “the other” in candidates’ statements.
-
Fear and panic messaging: Avoid being swayed by manipulative threats, such as “If you don’t elect us, there will be civil war”; decisions should be based on verified information.
-
Fake polls: Approach surveys with caution if they lack scientific methodology or credible sources; they may be part of perception management.
-
Fake comments: Recognize that messages of support circulating via bot accounts may not come from real people.
KTGB stated that the campaign aims to protect the public’s right to accurate information during elections, enhance media literacy, and encourage citizens to question, verify, and think critically.
The public service messages and campaign visuals are being widely shared on social media under the #Question (#sorgula) hashtag to reach broad audiences.
