Erhürman and Üstel Clash Over “Seriousness” and Governance
The political tension between Northern Cyprus’ top leaders escalated as President Tufan Erhürman and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel exchanged sharp statements over governance and the state of the country.
Erhürman responded on social media to Üstel’s call for “state seriousness” and respect for the “rule of law,” dismissing it as a “bad April Fools’ joke.” He said there was no time for such distractions, emphasizing the need to focus on the nation’s future and public welfare.
Üstel fired back in a written statement, describing Erhürman’s remarks as “detached from the realities of the country and the world.” He stressed that conflicts in the Middle East and their economic impacts were serious matters, not subjects for social media commentary. Üstel highlighted the government’s duty to address economic and security challenges with rational policies rather than rhetoric.
The exchange underscores growing friction between the presidency and the government over crisis management, governance style, and public communication in Northern Cyprus.
