Dust Storm Hits Cyprus; Health Warning Issued
A wave of dust particles carried from North Africa has led to severe air pollution across Cyprus since the early hours of the morning, with the sky turning shades of yellow and grey. The Department of Meteorology has warned that the conditions are expected to persist for several days, advising sensitive groups to take precautions.
Speaking to Kıbrıs Postası, Internal Medicine Specialist and Immunology and Allergy Diseases expert Dr. Musa Topel warned that the dust could trigger attacks, particularly in individuals with asthma and respiratory allergies. He urged residents to avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary, adding that those who must go out should cover their mouth and nose for protection.
Topel also advised keeping windows closed, noting that the dust can infiltrate indoor spaces and pose health risks. He stressed that the airborne particles include not only dust but also pollen and other pollutants, placing individuals with pollen allergies at increased risk.
Highlighting the importance of regular medication use, Topel called on vulnerable groups, especially those with chronic conditions, to remain cautious as the dust is expected to continue affecting the region in the coming days.
