Erhürman: ‘No Solution Is Possible If Turkish Cypriots Are Ignored’
President Tufan Erhürman has made a statement on social media regarding the Cyprus issue and recent developments, stressing that an approach which ignores Turkish Cypriots cannot lead to a solution.
In his assessment of recent consecutive statements and agreements announced by the Greek Cypriot leadership, Erhürman emphasised that any approach excluding Turkish Cypriots would not contribute to a settlement. He called on all parties seeking a solution to reassess whether the steps being taken actually contribute to the peace process.
“We Do Not Go A Day Without Hearing New Statements”
In his full post, Erhürman said:
“We do not go a day without hearing new agreement announcements from the Greek Cypriot leadership and new statements regarding the Cyprus issue.
On the one hand, there is a new agreement on military cooperation with France; on the other, there is the claim that ‘the process has already started’ regarding the new initiative expected after elections in the south and the EU presidency of Mr. Guterres.
Criticism Of Von Der Leyen
Erhürman also referred to recent statements by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, saying he agrees that the Cyprus issue is directly linked to regional stability and prosperity.
However, he criticised her remarks suggesting that Europe should not be left under “Russian, Turkish and Chinese influence,” as well as references to energy projects such as the Great Sea Interconnector, which he said treat Turkish Cypriots as if they do not exist.
He also referred to previous controversial remarks attributed to her, including comments about “innovation under Byzantine churches in Cyprus” and the “ritual of looking through a hole.”
“Can A Solution Be Achieved By Ignoring Turkish Cypriots?”
Erhürman said that while there is no obligation to respond to every statement, the increasing number of such remarks requires a simple question and a sincere call.
“Is there really anyone who thinks a solution can be achieved on this island by ignoring Turkish Cypriots?” he asked.
He added that he was calling on all those who say they support a solution to reconsider whether these statements and actions truly help the peace process.
“We Are Here With Patience And Determination”
Erhürman concluded by stating:
“As for us, within the framework of our people’s will for a solution, we are here with patience, composure, seriousness and determination.”
