Chamber of Commerce: Energy Problem Cannot be Solved Through Price Hikes
The Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Commerce (KTTO) has said that the recent increase in electricity prices by the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority (KIB-TEK) will negatively affect both businesses and households, stressing that the energy problem should be addressed through short-, medium- and long-term planning rather than price increases.
In a written statement, the Chamber drew attention to the latest rise in electricity tariffs, noting that the timing of the increase ahead of the holiday period, combined with higher consumption during the summer months, will place a significant burden on businesses.
The statement said:
“KIB-TEK has increased electricity prices once again. This increase, which coincides with the holiday period, will seriously affect businesses together with rising electricity consumption during the summer months.
Households will also be significantly affected by this increase, and life will become more difficult.
Electricity generation, distribution and pricing have long been one of the main problems of our country.
Despite strong public reactions to at least two price increases every year and the difficulties faced by households, it is unacceptable that the electricity problem is not being addressed with seriousness.
There is a serious energy problem in the TRNC. In an island country facing various political difficulties, this issue must be prioritised and brought under control through short-, medium- and long-term planning, with continuous monitoring and updates of these plans.
This is primarily the responsibility of the government. However, instead of sharing energy plans with the public, the government is attempting to address the issue through day-to-day decisions or surprise measures.
In all projects considered for the TRNC, priority should be given to solar energy and reducing energy prices by benefiting from it. Public authorities, civil society organisations and experts should also be involved in project development processes.
The Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Commerce will continue to fulfil its responsibilities in this regard and inform the public.
The energy problem cannot be solved through new price increases linked to fuel costs. If the energy problem is not resolved and cost increases are not brought under control, the TRNC economy cannot move forward.
The government must urgently inform the public about what it is doing or planning to do, and provide guidance for households and businesses on energy investments.”
