Socialist International Voices Strong Support for Cyprus Solution, Calls for Immediate Resumption of Talks
Socialist International has issued a strong call for the resumption of United Nations-led peace negotiations in Cyprus, following the unanimous adoption of a joint resolution submitted by the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and the Social Democrat Party (TDP).
The resolution, endorsed at the Socialist International Council meeting held in Istanbul, reaffirmed support for a comprehensive settlement based on political equality and denounced external attempts to increase military presence or fuel tensions on the island.
CTP Secretary General Erkut Şahali and Foreign Affairs Secretary Fikri Toros represented the party at the gathering. The joint resolution, read by Toros, urges Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders to restart negotiations toward a bizonal, bicommunal federation.
The resolution also expressed deep concern over the prolonged stalemate since the collapse of talks in 2017, emphasizing that Cyprus should serve as a model for peace, cooperation, and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Highlighting the need for new crossing points as part of Confidence Building Measures, the statement underscored the importance of practical steps to foster reconciliation. It further called for the protection of the Turkish Cypriot community's rights within the context of the European Union’s Schengen process.
The resolution concluded by stressing that the citizenship rights of children born from mixed marriages must be respected and that all Cypriots should be able to live free from discrimination.
