Üstel: TRNC Judiciary Is Independent and Competent

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has criticised statements from the Greek Cypriot leadership regarding the arrest of individuals in the TRNC, describing them as “political manipulation.”

Üstel stressed that the arrests were fully legal and legitimate judicial actions carried out within the TRNC’s sovereign territory, and that “no one’s ethnic origin or political affiliation is above the law.”
He underlined that the suspects were brought before the courts for violating TRNC laws, with the entire process conducted under the principles of the rule of law and the oversight of an independent judiciary.
Üstel said the TRNC’s legal system is established, functional, and constitutionally independent, and will not accept any external interference. He accused the Greek Cypriot side of portraying individuals engaged in illegal activities in the TRNC as “victims,” thereby undermining UN-led diplomatic efforts and fuelling intercommunal mistrust.
Reiterating that the TRNC will take all necessary legal steps to safeguard public order and security, Üstel called on the international community to recognise the one-sided and provocative nature of the Greek Cypriot statements and to adopt an impartial stance for regional stability.
