Tatar: I Hope 2026 Will Be A Year When The TRNC’s Just Cause Is Better Understood
Fifth President Ersin Tatar has said he hopes 2026 will be a year in which the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus becomes more visible internationally, pursues its sovereignty-based national policy with determination, and takes significant steps towards recognition.
In his New Year message, Tatar expressed the hope that 2026 would see the TRNC gain greater international visibility, its just cause better understood, and meaningful progress made on the path to recognition. He stressed the importance of continuing the sovereignty-based national policy in harmony and consultation with the Republic of Turkey, noting that experience has shown that exhausted political models which fail to produce results no longer offer any hope of a solution in Cyprus.
With the end of 2025, Tatar said not only a year but also a quarter of a century had come to a close. During this period, he noted, global balances have shifted, new alliances have emerged in the region, and the Eastern Mediterranean has become an increasingly strategic and sensitive area.
“Yet despite all these developments, the one unchanging reality is that the Turkish Cypriot people continue their honourable struggle with determination, resolve and faith,” Tatar said. He added that approaches which ignore the will of the Turkish Cypriot people and disregard their sovereignty and equality bring not peace to the island, but only uncertainty.
Tatar stated that, in light of changing global and regional dynamics, the existence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a separate and sovereign Turkish state is one of the fundamental elements of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
He also underlined that the strong support of the Republic of Turkey is beyond all appreciation in terms of the security, prosperity and future of the people, adding that this stance is a clear expression of the sovereignty rights that the Turkish Cypriot people will never relinquish.
