Erhürman: Leaderships Must Strengthen Preventive Dialogue Mechanisms

In a post on his social media account, Erhürman drew attention to confidence-building proposals included in the ten-point package presented at the negotiating table, as well as to developments in the buffer zone in recent days.

“One of the proposals in the ten-point package we submitted to the negotiating table was the establishment of a mechanism to ensure direct dialogue between Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot security forces. The aim was to enable immediate contact without losing time in the event of any problems,” Erhürman said.

Referring to violations carried out by Greek Cypriot farmers in the buffer zone, and in some cases beyond it, in the final days of 2025, Erhürman noted that these incidents caused tension. He said that the Greek Cypriot leadership had immediately issued accusatory statements using language that was unacceptable.

Erhürman stated that, following these developments, they promptly requested reports and established contact with United Nations officials. “We ensured that dialogue was established between our competent authorities and UN officials on this issue. Our aim is to prevent the recurrence of incidents that increase tension,” he said.

He also underlined that preventing tensions depends on the UN’s full implementation of all agreements and understandings reached to date, as well as the effective functioning of dialogue mechanisms.

Erhürman concluded by stressing that the responsibility of leaderships is to strengthen preventive dialogue mechanisms and to refrain from language and statements that would poison the atmosphere or heighten tensions.
