In an interview with Politis, Metsola said that resolving the Cyprus problem is also Europe’s responsibility, adding that the European Parliament stands ready to provide full political backing to efforts aimed at enhancing confidence-building measures and fostering trust and coexistence on the island.

According to the report, Metsola noted that Cyprus has the capacity to deliver a successful term as President of the EU Council and can use this experience to strengthen unity and cohesion within the Union by focusing on the elements that bring member states together.

She pointed out that Cyprus’s EU Council Presidency will coincide with a critical period for Europe, underlining that expectations are high and that she is aware Cyprus is prepared to meet them.

Metsola said that during her meetings with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, she observed that Cyprus is making serious preparations for its EU Council Presidency. She added that Cyprus can make meaningful contributions in areas such as support for Ukraine, stability in the Middle East, increasing resilience in the energy sector and enhancing Europe’s competitiveness.

According to the report, Metsola also stated that the European Parliament has played a catalytic role in efforts to achieve a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue and in building trust. She noted that the EP has ensured the issue remains high on the European agenda, supported the appointment of a permanent rapporteur for missing persons, and backed UN-led efforts for a settlement.

Emphasising that progress on the Cyprus issue is possible, Metsola said the European Parliament contributes to creating conditions for coexistence by providing political support, strengthening confidence-building measures and ensuring continued European attention to the issue.
