South Cyprus Takes Over EU Council Presidency: A Turning Point Year For Cyprus
South Cyprus has officially assumed the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union as of Jan 1. Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides said that 2026 would be a “turning point” year for Cyprus, noting that the country would work for six months toward the goal of a “world-oriented and autonomous European Union.”

In his New Year message, Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides said that 2026 would mark a turning point for Cyprus, stressing that the country would hold the EU Council Presidency for six months. “For six months, our country will assume the presidency of the Council of the European Union. This is not only a moment of pride, but also a national duty and a great responsibility. I believe we will respond to it successfully,” Christodoulides said.
He added that during its term, South Cyprus would work toward a “European Union that is open to the world and autonomous,” recalling that this would be the second time Cyprus has assumed the rotating presidency since joining the EU in 2004.
The Council of the European Union also welcomed South Cyprus with a post on its official social media account, stating: “Welcome Cyprus. A new chapter begins today with Cyprus taking over the Council Presidency. We look forward to the next six months.”
Separately, commenting beyond the EU Council Presidency, Christodoulides said that as Cyprus enters 2026, the Republic of Cyprus is moving forward with confidence and pride on a path of economic growth, thanks to what he described as responsible fiscal policies.
