Handwriting Dispute Emerges in Künzel Property Trial

In the ongoing trial of German real estate agent Ewa Izabella Künzel, accused of involvement in the alleged unlawful appropriation of former Greek Cypriot properties in the north, expert testimony has cast doubt on the authenticity of key evidence.

During a hearing at the Nicosia Criminal Court in the south on Monday, forensic handwriting expert Marios Markides challenged the findings of police graphologist Georgios Chrysanthou, claiming that a disputed section of a consent form signed by Künzel was not written by her.
According to Alithia newspaper, the defence focused its objections on the circumstances surrounding Künzel’s apprehension at the airport, the language used during her arrest, and the conditions under which she signed the consent form allowing her belongings to be searched.
Markides stated that based on his analysis, the handwriting in question did not match Künzel’s and suggested that a third party may have filled out parts of the document.
The defence raised concerns over whether the entire form was completed by Künzel or in part by others. In contrast, police graphologist Chrysanthou maintained that all documents had been signed by Künzel herself.
The prosecution has reportedly agreed to investigate the expert’s objections further, as the validity of the consent form could prove crucial in determining the lawfulness of the evidence gathered during Künzel’s arrest.
