Speaking after the hearing, Hakkı expressed confidence in judicial independence and warned that the case could undermine the credibility of the Immovable Property Commission and weaken the Turkish Cypriot side’s international standing.

“This case undermines the credibility of the Immovable Property Commission and weakens the position of the Turkish Cypriot side internationally,” Hakkı said outside the courthouse. He described his arrest as a threat not only at the domestic level but also within the scope of international law.

Hakkı stressed that he trusted the judiciary, calling the courts the “pride” of the country, and explained that his decision to return despite knowing he would face arrest stemmed from his confidence in judicial independence. He also criticized being brought to court in handcuffs, calling it “an insult to the legal profession.”

Recalling that his clients are Greek Cypriots, Hakkı said the information he possessed was part of his clients’ rights. He emphasized that the legal community should stand united, adding: “We walk into these courts with our heads held high. I trust the independence of the judiciary.”

He also revealed that the case involved five parcels of land belonging to five Greek Cypriots, with the TRNC authorities listed as the complainant. If the matter reaches the European Court of Human Rights, Hakkı warned, it could place Turkish Cypriots in a difficult position.

When asked whether the case was politically motivated, Hakkı replied, “What needed to be said has been said. I have no further comment on that,” while once again underscoring his trust in the judiciary.

Background
Hakkı was arrested at Ercan Airport upon his return to the island. Cyprus Turkish Bar Association President Hasan Esendağlı stated yesterday that the charges were linked to professional research and documentation Hakkı conducted for his Greek Cypriot clients, which overlapped with the ongoing trial of five Greek Cypriot nationals arrested in July.
